Copying a ready-made lesson from the library
The library is where MitsuruTech keeps lessons, tasks and files for colleges to use. Library on the bar lists everything offered to your college, and Copy into puts a copy in one of your modules.
What you see there
Only what has been offered to your college. Some items are offered to every college and some to particular ones, so two colleges may see different lists. Search by name, or show only lessons, tasks or files.
It is arranged in folders. Open one to see what is inside, and use the path at the top to go back up. A search looks through every folder and says which folder each match is in.
Each item shows when it was last updated. The library keeps no versions, so a copy you took earlier is not behind a numbered release: copy the item again to take what is there now.
A basic lesson for every lab, in the Basics folder, is offered to every college: Git Basics, SQL Basics, API Basics, Juice Shop Basics, DVWA Basics and WebGoat Basics, a second lesson for each of those six, Static Routing Basics, OSPF Basics and BGP Basics, and one for each lab added since, such as Linux Administration Basics, Docker Basics or WireGuard Basics. Each is worked in its own lab, a Git server, a MySQL database, a database with a web API, a deliberately insecure website or an Ubuntu VM, so a class can practise committing and pushing, writing SQL, calling an API, a first web security exercise or reading a router’s table without installing anything.
Copying one into a module
Pick a module you teach in the Copy into column and press Copy. You land on your copy, ready to edit. It is a whole copy: its blocks, files, tests and lab come with it, and nobody is given it until you hand it out.
The copy is yours. Changing it changes nothing in the library or at any other college, and a later change to the library does not reach your copy. Copy again to get the new version.
Two lessons that use the same lab, such as Git Level 1 and Git Level 2, share one copy of the lab when both are copied into the same module.
A file, such as a worksheet or a slide deck, goes into the module’s Resources, where every student on the module can open it. If the module already has a file of that name, the copy is given a number, such as notes-2.pdf.
On a personal account: your Library
If you use a free personal account, Home has a big Library button. It opens the lessons offered to personal accounts, each with when it was last updated. Press Add to my lessons and the lesson is yours: it appears on Home with the others, and its lab, if it has one, is your own.
A lesson you add is yours for good. It is never taken away or replaced, and the Library keeps no versions. If a lesson is updated after you added it, its card says so and offers Add the new copy, which sits beside the one you have. Delete the old one yourself if you want to.
Remove from my lessons takes a lesson off your Home, and asks first. What you wrote in it is kept, so adding it again brings it back. Nothing curriculum-specific, such as a T Level or a BTEC, is offered here.
Staff at a college see a Library button on Home too, which opens the library described above.
Shared by colleges, and the T Level preview
The Library folder “Shared by colleges” holds the lessons, tasks and files colleges have shared for review. It is offered to nobody until a sysadmin offers it, so being filed there does not show it to a college, and none of it is ever shown on our Resources pages, which are all written by us. See Sharing a lesson with the Library.
One curriculum folder has a public face, and only as a preview: T Level Digital. The page /resources/t-level lists its chapters, and each lesson opens its first page, with its first quiz, matching puzzle or crossword working for anybody. A go is marked on the server and kept nowhere, and no right answer is ever in the page. Everything after the first page, the tasks, the final check and the labs, is a college’s, and the page says so beside an offer of a college account, free for the first year.
Questions people ask
- Can my college add its own lessons to the library?
- Not directly: only MitsuruTech writes there. To offer your own lesson, task or file to everybody, use Share for review, which sends us a copy to read; see Sharing a lesson with the Library, which promises nothing about it appearing here. To share work with another teacher, see Reusing a task.
- Why can I not see a lesson another college has?
- Each item or folder is offered separately, and some may be offered only to certain colleges.
- Can I copy a whole folder at once?
- No, one lesson, task or file at a time, into whichever module suits it.
- Is everything offered to colleges also offered to personal accounts?
- No. Those are separate choices, made item by item. Curriculum material, such as a T Level or a BTEC, is never offered to the Public college: it is for the colleges that teach it.
- Can I take a lesson back out of my Library on a personal account?
- Yes. Remove from my lessons takes it off your own lessons only, after asking. Nobody else loses it, and what you wrote in it is kept.
- Can a stranger see the answers to a quiz in a library lesson?
- No. A quiz in the T Level preview is marked on the server, and its answers are never sent to the page.
