GitHub Classroom alternative

After GitHub Classroom: how the MitsuruTech Learning Platform compares.

Two of the tools a department used to reach for have gone. Here is the platform beside the paid options a school, college or university is most likely weighing, from their own published pages on 5 October 2026.

The ones that have gone

  • GitHub Classroom was deprecated on 28 August 2026, in favour of GitHub’s partner solutions; its website and APIs were turned off.
  • Replit Teams for Education closed on 1 August 2024, after Replit announced in November 2023 that it was ending it.

Questions people ask

What happened to GitHub Classroom?

GitHub deprecated GitHub Classroom on 28 August 2026 in favour of its partner solutions, and its website and APIs were turned off. Repositories and organisations were kept; classroom data such as assignment names and rosters was not.

What happened to Replit Teams for Education?

Replit announced in November 2023 that it was ending Teams for Education, and it closed on 1 August 2024.

Is there a free alternative to GitHub Classroom for a school or college?

The MitsuruTech Learning Platform is free for a college’s first 365 days, for up to 50 students, with no payment method to start. Students write and run code in the browser, your own tests mark it, and staff accounts are always free.

Can students deploy a web app from GitHub?

Yes. A student gives a public GitHub repository, a branch and a start command, and the app runs in a container of its own on an address the student can keep, with a database and an AWS-compatible cloud stack beside it and no AWS account.

How much does it cost after the free year?

US$450 a year for your first 50 students, then US$9 a student a year, falling to US$6.75 for the largest cohorts. Staff are free, and the whole price is published with no quote to request.

The first year is free, so the comparison that matters is your own department’s.
