SESP task 4b: Reflect and say what to improve

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

If you did it again

A builder finishes a job. The client is pleased. The builder says, "If I did this again, I would order the cable a week earlier and test the Wi-Fi in the hall first."

That sentence is why people trust her. She knows what worked, what did not, and what she would change. An evaluation shows the same thinking.

By the end of this lesson

I can reflect on my work and suggest improvements, with reasons, in order of value.

This is practice

Important

The real Task 4b uses the real brief and the exam board's format. The firm and the results here are invented. Practise the thinking, then use it on your own build and its own evidence.

Three questions to reflect on

Reflecting is easy if you ask three questions.

  1. What worked, and what is the evidence? 2. What did not work, and why? 3. If I did it again, what would I change, and what would that change give?

Answer each with a fact from your own tests or your users, not a feeling.

Worked example: reflecting on a build

QuestionWeak answerStrong answer
What worked? The system was goodAll 30 desks reached the server with 0 percent loss, shown by test T1
What did not work? Some bits were a bit slowThe spare line took 45 seconds to take over, not the 30 in the criterion, so staff would notice a gap
What would I change?Make it betterTest the spare line before the build, because the cause was a wrong setting. That would meet the 30 second target
What are the limits of my evidence?NoneI asked only 4 users, all on the same floor, so I cannot say how the night staff find it
