SESP task 4b: Measure your work against the brief

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

55 minutes

"It went well" is not an evaluation

You hand in your build. The marker reads, "It went well and the client was happy." What went well? How well? How do you know the client was happy?

An evaluation uses numbers, tests and quotes. It shows the work against the list of things it had to do.

By the end of this lesson

Note

I can measure my finished work against each success criterion and show the evidence.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Success criterionone thing the finished work must do, written so it can be measured
Measurea number or a test result that shows how well a criterion was met
Targetthe value a measure must reach for the criterion to be met
Evidencesomething you made that shows what you did and what happened
User feedbackwhat the people who use the system say about it
Networkcomputers and devices joined together so they can share data

This is practice

Important

The real Task 4b uses the real brief and its own success criteria, and the exam board decides how to show your evaluation. These examples are invented. Practise the method, then use it on the real criteria.

A criterion you can measure

A good criterion has a number or a clear yes or no. "The network is fast" cannot be measured. "A desk reaches the server with 0 percent loss" can.

Write each criterion with a measure and a target. Then you can say, in one word, whether it was met.

Worked example: measure each criterion

Desks reach the serverMessages lost, in percent1 or less0Ping test T1, 30 of 30 desksMet
