DI 3.5; NC 3.5; DS 3.5; CS 3.5: Corroboration and triangulation

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

55 minutes

Three clues, one culprit

The log says the server restarted at 2 am. The night guard saw a power flicker at 2 am. A user's phone shows the Wi-Fi dropped at 2 am.

Any one clue could be a fluke. Three that agree tell a story.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Corroborationmaking existing information stronger with other sources
Cross-referencingchecking one fact in other places
Triangulationchecking a result against more than two different sources
Observationwatching and recording a task as it happens
Conclusiona short statement of how accurate or fit the results are
Recommendationa suggestion for what to do next
Consistentthe results match each other

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

By the end of this lesson

Note

I can tell corroboration from triangulation and finish an evaluation with a conclusion and recommendations.

Five ideas side by side

IdeaWhat it meansExample
Cross-referencingCheck a fact in other placesLook up the cable limit in a second guide
CorroborationStrengthen what you already have with other sourcesThe maker's guide and a textbook both say 100 metres
TriangulationCheck results from more than two different sources for consistencyLog, user report and a site visit all show the same time
ObservationWatch a task as it happensSit beside a user as they raise a ticket
Conclusion and recommendationSummarise accuracy, then suggest what to doThe log is reliable. Fit a power backup

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Finish with a conclusion and a recommendation

A conclusion says how accurate the results are, for example: all three sources agree, so power is the likely cause. A recommendation says what to do, for example: fit a battery backup.

Triangulation uses different kinds of source. Three copies of one source are not triangulation.
