DI 2.19: Business continuity plans against recovery plans

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

Two plans for one flood

A flood hits a bank branch. The doors close. Customers still want money and the staff still want to work.

One plan says: serve people from a van and let staff work from home today. Another plan says: dry the building, buy new machines and restore the data.

They are different plans with different jobs.

The business continuity plan

A business continuity plan (BCP) is about carrying on during a disruptive event. The goal is to keep the important work going, even if it is slower or different.

It uses three ideas: alternative premises, adaptive policies and processes, and alternative technologies.

The disaster recovery plan

A disaster recovery plan (DRP) is about getting back to normal after a disaster, such as a flood.

It has two main jobs. The first is restoring functionality or access, for example by restoring data and services. The second is replacing infrastructure resources that were damaged, such as servers and switches.
