DI 1.13; NC 1.12; DS 1.12: The five steps of risk management

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

45 minutes

A school server room is flooding

A pipe leaks above the server room. Nobody saw it coming. The school loses its files for two days.

A risk is a bad thing that might happen. If someone had looked at the risk first, they could have moved the pipe, or moved the servers.

Note

I can name the five steps of risk management and put them in order.

Key words

WordWhat it meansExample
Riska bad thing that might happen, and how bad it would beA leak damages the servers.
Threatsomething that could cause harmA burst pipe
Vulnerabilitya weak point that a threat can useServers on the floor
Probabilityhow likely it is to happenHigh, medium or low
Impacthow much damage it would doTwo days with no files
Assetsomething of value that we protectA server or a customer list
Prioritiseput in order, the most serious first
Mitigationan action that makes the probability or the impact smallerMove the servers upstairs

Five steps, always in the same order

Risk management is a process. It has five steps.

  1. Identification: find the risks, threats and weak points.
  2. Probability: say how likely each one is.
  3. Impact: say how much damage it would do.
  4. Prioritisation: put the risks in order and give each an owner.
  5. Mitigation: act to make the risk smaller.

Worked example: the leaking pipe

StepWhat we doThe server room example
IdentificationFind the riskA water pipe runs above the servers
ProbabilityHow likely?Medium: the pipe is old
ImpactHow bad?High: two days with no files
PrioritisationRank it, name an ownerNumber 1 on the list. The site manager owns it.
MitigationMake it smallerMove the pipe and fit a water alarm

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.
