DI 1.1; NC 1.1; DS 1.1: Managed access and separate duties

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

Who opened the door?

A key can be copied. A key cannot say who used it. A card, a fingerprint or a PIN can.

Managed access checks who you are, lets you in and writes it down. In this lesson you also meet two rules for people at work: separate duties and role-based access.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Managed accessLetting only checked people in, and recording who came.
Card readerA device that reads a staff card to open a door.
BiometricA check that uses your body, such as a fingerprint or a face.
PINA short secret number you type in.
PasscodeA longer secret code you type in.
CCTVClosed-circuit television: cameras that send video to screens or a recorder.
Separation of dutiesSplitting a risky job between two people so one person cannot misuse it.

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Cycle 1: managed access

Managed access mixes a physical door with a check. Four ways:

Card readers use something you have. A biometric check uses something you are. PINs and passcodes use something you know. Video, such as CCTV and a door camera, lets a guard see who is at the door.

Use two together, such as card and PIN, for a stronger door.
