SC 3.1: Five ways organisations use data

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

45 minutes

Three failed logins at 2am

At 2am somebody tries to sign in as Leo three times and fails each time. Leo is asleep.

The log recorded every try. Because the company reads its logs, it spots the problem and locks the account before anything is stolen. Data is only useful if somebody uses it.

By the end of this lesson

Note

I can describe five ways an organisation uses data and say if the data suits the job.

Key words

WordWhat it meansExample
PatternSomething that repeats in data.Lock-outs every Monday
LoadHow much work a system is doing.400 users at once
OutageA time when a system is not working.Email was down for 20 minutes
ThroughputHow much data a system handles in a set time.50 tickets an hour
LogA record of events kept by a system.A login log
UpsellingOffering a customer something extra or better.A longer warranty

Five uses of data

An organisation uses its data and information in five main ways:

  1. Analysis to find patterns. Which faults happen most?
  2. System performance. Load, outages, throughput and status.
  3. User monitoring. When people log in and out, and what they open.
  4. Targeted marketing. Discounts and upselling to the right people.
  5. Threat and opportunity checks. Competitors, security and compliance.

Each use with a support example
