The list that has to move
A school keeps its laptop loans in a spreadsheet. A new system needs the same list. The two programs cannot open each other's files.
Both can read plain text. Saving the table as text is the way across.

I can describe how a table is organised and save it as a text file.

Worksheets, rows and columns
A spreadsheet file holds one or more worksheets. A worksheet is a grid.
A row goes across and holds one record, such as one laptop loan. A column goes down and holds one kind of fact, such as the number of days.
The first row is often a header row. It names each column.
A loans worksheet
| name | laptop | days |
|---|---|---|
| Amy | L-101 | 3 |
| Bo | L-102 | 7 |
| Cy | L-103 | 5 |
The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.
Read the table
Note
The header row is name, laptop, days. Each of the three rows after it is one loan. The column called days holds 3, 7 and 5. The cell where Bo's row meets the days column holds 7.
