DS 2.29: Ways to train people to use technology

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

55 minutes

New system on Monday

A school changes its attendance system. Teachers have to use it from Monday. Some love new tools. Some are scared of them. Some have only ten minutes.

One session for all will not work. The right training method depends on the person and the job.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Shadowinglearning by watching an experienced person do the job
Desk sidetraining given at the learner's own desk, one to one
E-learninglearning online, at your own pace
Virtual realitya fully computer-made world you enter with a headset
Augmented realitycomputer images added on top of the real world
Simulationa safe copy of a real task, used to practise
Smart boardan interactive screen that a class can see and touch
Learnerthe person being trained

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Note

I can name the methods used to train people in digital systems and choose one for a case.

Training with people

Shadowing. The learner watches an expert do the job, then copies it. Desk side. The trainer sits with the learner at their own desk, on their own work. It is one to one. Remote support. The trainer shows the steps over a remote link, when they cannot be there.

These three are personal. They are slow for many people, but they fit the individual well.

Training with technology

E-learning. Short online lessons with checks. People learn when it suits them. Virtual reality (VR). The learner puts on a headset and practises in a made-up world, for example fault-finding in a virtual server room. Augmented reality (AR). Images are added over the real thing, for example labels on a real cable. Smart boards. A trainer shows a whole class on an interactive screen.

Apps and simulation

Applications such as Kahoot! and Padlet make training active. Kahoot! runs quick quizzes. Padlet is a shared board where learners post ideas. Simulation is a safe copy of a real job. A learner can make mistakes with no harm done, such as practising a password reset on a copy of the system.

5 more parts of this lesson are in the full curriculum, with the tasks, the final check and the labs. A college account gives your students all of it.
