DS 2.18: Remote access and what it is for

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

45 minutes

The office closes, the work does not

On Monday morning, a burst pipe floods the office. Nobody can go in. A hundred staff must still work.

The purpose of remote access

Remote access lets people work from another place, using the network and its resources as if they were in the office. Or as if they were on any one of several networks.

It matters most in a crisis. An office closure can be part of a business continuity plan. Remote access lets staff keep working from home.

Three uses

Desktop sharing. A user lets you see and control their screen. You both look at the same thing. It is good for showing how to do a job.

Remote support. You diagnose a fault from a distance and fix it, such as changing a setting or installing an update.

Off-site working. Staff work from home, or on a trip, and use the same files and programs as in the office.
