Fifty laptops in fifty homes
A firm sends 50 laptops to staff who work from home. Every one needs the same system and the same programs. A technician cannot visit 50 houses.
So the job is done from a distance, with a plan, in waves, and with a test at the end.
Key words
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Remote deployment | putting software or a system on computers from a distance |
| Task sequence | a list of steps run in order during a build |
| Capture | to save a built PC as an image file |
| Wave | one group of PCs in a roll-out |
| Idempotent | safe to run twice: the second run changes nothing |
| Dry run | a test run that shows what would change without changing it |
| Driver | a small program that lets the system use a piece of hardware |
| Policy | a written rule an organisation expects people to follow |

Note
I can plan and carry out a remote deployment, from user data to a final test.

Gather and analyse user data
Start with the users. Ask what jobs they do and which programs they need. Ask what devices they have. Count them. This is the user data.
Analyse it. Are the PCs alike or varied? Does one group need special software? The answers decide the method.
Choose and configure the method
For thin imaging, gather the software installers and drivers. Then build the task sequence: the steps that install them in order.
For a base image, install the system, drivers and software on one PC. Configure them. Then capture the PC as an image file.
