DI 2.22: Describing an architecture: five terms

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

One building, many questions

The college is planning new IT for its buildings. The head asks: "Will it be safe?" The finance manager asks: "What will it cost?" A teacher asks: "Will it work in my room?"

One diagram cannot answer all three. So architects draw different pictures for different people, using five key terms.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Systemthe thing being described, such as the college network
Stakeholdera person or group with an interest in the system
Concernsomething a stakeholder cares about, such as cost, safety or speed

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

The five terms

The system is the thing described. The stakeholders are the people with an interest in it. Each stakeholder has concerns.

A viewpoint is a way of looking that answers certain concerns. A view is the picture or document that you make with that viewpoint.
