CS 3.8: When services stop: health, comms, transport

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

60 minutes

The ambulance that cannot be sent

A call comes in. The dispatch computer is locked by an attack. The crew do not know where to go.

Every minute counts. Some computer systems protect lives. This lesson covers the rest of the critical services.

Five more areas and their impacts

AreaImpacts of a cyber attack
HealthcarePatient records leak, are lost or are changed. Staff cannot talk or treat patients well
Communication technologies and internet service providersLoss of service, people and firms cut off, eavesdropping and impersonation
DefenceThe armed forces of the country are weaker
TransportBuses, trains and planes, public or private, stop or run late
Emergency services dispatchCrews take longer to arrive and can do less

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Why health data matters

Patient records are private. If they leak, people lose trust. If they are changed or lost, a doctor may give the wrong care.

A health service that cannot reach its systems may not see a patient's allergies. That is why health is a critical service.
