CS 2.14: Nature and people as threats

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

A storm and a spilt drink

On Monday a storm cuts the power to an office. On Tuesday a worker spills tea on a server. On Wednesday a fake email asks for a password.

Three days, three different kinds of threat. A good assessor lists all three before any of them happen.

Environmental threats

These come from nature or from the building and its kit. Nobody means them to happen.

The list is: power failure, power spikes, natural disasters, fire, equipment failure and flooding.

You cannot stop a storm. You can plan for it with a spare power supply, surge protection and a safe place for the servers.

Environmental threats and ideas to cope

ThreatWhat it can doAn idea to cope
Power failureStops every deviceA battery that keeps kit running for a while
Power spikeBurns out equipmentSurge protection on sockets
