CS 1.14: Corrective controls: limit the damage

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

The alarm has already gone off

Smoke rises in the server room. A lock and a camera cannot help now. The harm has started.

What you need now is a control that limits the damage and stops it happening again. Today you meet the corrective kind.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Corrective controlA safeguard that limits harm after a problem starts, and stops it coming back.
Fire suppressionPutting out a fire.
SprinklerA device that sprays water when it senses fire.
Gas suppressionPutting out a fire with gas, not water.
Inert gasA gas that lowers the oxygen in a room so a fire cannot burn.
Chemical agentA gas that stops the chemical reaction of a fire.
MalwareSoftware made to do harm.
Disaster recovery planA written plan for how to respond to an unplanned event. Short form: DRP.
QuarantineMoving a harmful file to a safe place where it cannot run.
PatchA small update that fixes a security problem.
Standard operating procedureA written set of steps for a job. Short form: SOP.

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

The purpose of corrective controls

A corrective control has two jobs. It limits the damage after a problem starts. And it limits the chance of the problem happening again.

It comes after prevention has failed or been beaten.

Physical: fire and gas suppression

Fire suppression uses sprinklers and extinguishers. Water can ruin computers, so server rooms often use gas suppression instead.

An inert gas system lowers the oxygen in the room. A chemical agent system stops the fire's chemical reaction. Neither one soaks the equipment. People must leave when the alarm sounds.

Technical: patch, disconnect, quarantine

Patching fixes the weakness that was used, so the attack cannot work again.

Disconnecting an infected system cuts it off, so the harm cannot spread.

Quarantining a virus moves it to a safe place where it cannot run.
