DA 6.7: Run an evaluation for a business need

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

60 minutes

Which tool should the club use?

A youth club needs a way to record who comes each week. Three free tools are on offer. Everyone has a favourite.

Favourites are not evidence. Today you run a small, fair evaluation, and write down what you found so that someone else can check it.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Evaluationjudging how well something meets a need, using evidence
Parameterswhat is judged, for whom, against what, and over how long
Criteriathe things you judge by, such as cost and ease of use

Worked example: the club attendance tool

StepWhat you doIn the club case
1 ParametersWhat, for whom, against what, how longThree tools, for 3 volunteers, against 3 criteria, tried for 2 weeks
2 SelectPick technique and toolA weighted score card, plus a short interview with the volunteers
3 ApplyUse the same test for every optionEach volunteer tries all three tools and scores them 1 to 5
4 RecordWrite the findings and limitsA table, the total, and a note that only 3 people took part

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Step 1: clarify the parameters

Before you test, write down what is judged, for whom, against which criteria and for how long. These are the parameters.

Without them, each person judges something different, and the result cannot be compared.
