DA 5.8: Four ways to respond to a risk

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

Four choices for one risk

A leisure centre collects health notes from swimmers. The risk: the notes could leak. The manager has four choices. Live with it. Pay someone else to hold it. Stop collecting the notes. Or make a leak less likely.

Every risk has these four responses. A good analyst knows all of them.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Personal dataInformation about a living person who can be identified.
Risk responseWhat you decide to do about a risk.
AcceptTo decide the risk is small enough to live with.
TransferTo move the risk to another party by a contract.
AvoidTo change the plan so the risk cannot happen.
MitigateTo make the risk smaller, by lowering how likely it is or how bad it would be.
EncryptionScrambling data so only people with the key can read it.
ScopeThe size and limits of a piece of work.

The four responses

Accept: the impact is judged small enough. You note it and carry on. Transfer: you move the risk to another party by a contract, such as a cloud company that stores the data. Avoid: you change the scope so the risk cannot happen. Mitigate: you lower the probability or the impact.

Responses for one risk: health notes leaking

ResponseWhat the leisure centre doesWhat is left
AcceptNotes the risk is low and does nothing elseAll of the risk
TransferPays a cloud company by contract to store the notes safelySome risk, and it still has legal duties
AvoidStops collecting health notesNo risk from that data
MitigateEncrypts the notes and limits who sees themA smaller risk
