AC 7.1: Where analysts' data work runs

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

40 minutes

Where does the data live?

An analyst for a school canteen opens a sales sheet on a laptop. She checks a chart on her phone on the bus. The numbers come from a machine in a locked room. The fridge that logs its own heat is also a computer.

That is four kinds of computer in one day of data work.

Personal computers and mobile devices

A personal computer (PC) is made for one person at a time. It has a screen, a keyboard and a mouse. It can be a desktop that stays on a desk, or a laptop with a battery.

A mobile device is a smartphone or a tablet. It is small and light. It has a touch screen and runs on a battery all day.
