AC 6.2: Judging new technology in data work

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

60 minutes

A new plan for Millbrook

The council of Millbrook, a made-up town, proposes smart lights and an AI system that plans bus routes.

Each part sounds good. But the lights make data, the data needs storing, and the AI needs the data. The parts depend on each other.

An analyst must see the links, and then judge: is this good for the town?

Key words

WordWhat it means
Machine learninga program that learns patterns from data
Blockchaina shared record kept in linked blocks that is very hard to change
Sensora part that measures something, such as heat or movement
Interrelationshipthe way two things depend on or affect each other
Judgementa decision you reach after weighing the facts
Impactthe effect something has
Evidencefacts that support a decision

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Note

I can make a reasoned judgement about the impact of linked technologies on an organisation, a person and society.

Technologies depend on each other

Few technologies work alone.

IoT sensors make data. Storage keeps it. Edge computing handles some of it close by. Machine learning finds patterns. Autonomous machines use sensors and AI to move. Blockchain can keep a trusted record of what happened.

One change spreads to the others.
