How organisations respond to change

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

The gym that moved online

A town gym is shut for six weeks because of a flood. Members cannot come in.

The owner has choices. She can wait. Or she can act. She starts online classes, changes opening hours when the gym opens again, trains the coaches to teach on video and updates the booking app.

Her response has many parts. Today you meet the main ones.

Changing a process

A process is the steps used to do a job. Organisations may change:

Number of staff. Add staff in a busy time, or move them.

Delivery times. Faster or slower delivery, or new delivery days.

Opening hours. Open later, or add an online shop that is open all day.

Each change often needs a change to the digital systems as well.

Changing a product or service

There are three sizes of change.

A minor update fixes mistakes or adds a small feature. A next generation product is a much improved version. A completely new product or service is a new idea.

A small update is cheap and low risk. A new product costs more and carries more risk.
