A project is a story with chapters
You will not do the project in one go. It comes in tasks, and each task makes something a marker can read.
If you know the chapters before you start, nothing in the middle comes as a surprise.
Key words
| Word | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Brief | the written description of what the client wants | |
| Evidence | something you make that shows what you did and why | |
| Success criteria | the list of things the finished work must do | |
| Portfolio | a folder of your work that you hand in | plans, tests and a design |
| Supervised | done in a room where a teacher watches and the rules are kept | |
| Pre-task | work you do before the marked tasks, to learn the setting |
The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Note
I can name the tasks of the data project, say what each one makes, and say how the work is done.

The tasks in order
There is a pre-task that nobody marks. Then there are five marked parts.
Task 1 is planning. Task 2 is finding and fixing faults in a data model and a dataset (a collection of data about one subject). Task 3 is design. Task 4a is building a solution. Task 4b is looking back at how well it worked.
Each task uses what the one before it made.
Worked example: what each task makes
| Task | What you do | What you hand in |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-task | Learn the setting | Your own notes, not marked |
| Task 1 | Plan the project | A Gantt chart, a resource and cost plan and a rationale |
| Task 2 | Test and fix a faulty model and dataset | Annotated test evidence and a corrected dataset |
| Task 3 | Design a better way to handle the data | An entity relationship diagram and data dictionaries |
| Task 4a | Build the solution | A working data product that meets the brief |
| Task 4b | Evaluate it | A review against the success criteria |

How the work is done
The marked tasks are done under supervision. You may not use the internet. You may not use AI or any other tool that writes a response for you.
The work is spread over several sessions. What you hand in is a portfolio, sent in electronically. People from industry look at it too, and ask whether it suits the client and its users.
Your centre sets the exact rules, so ask your teacher.
This is practice
Important
The real task comes from the exam board. This lesson uses an invented organisation and its own made-up data. Your teacher tells you how the real tasks are set and what you may bring.
