DA 5.4, 5.5: Where the data rules are found

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

Can we keep the guest photos?

A new analyst joins a hotel chain. Her manager asks, "Can we keep guests' ID photos for five years?" She does not know. She does not guess either.

Four places to look

Rules come from more than one place. Start with the one that fits your question.

The ICO explains data protection law in plain steps. Government websites hold the law itself. Industry regulators set rules for one kind of business. Your own organisation has policies and procedures that apply to you.
