DA 5.11: Ethics of consent, access and reuse

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

60 minutes

Yes to one thing, not to everything

Members of a gym give their details to book classes. A year later the gym sells the list to an advertising company. The members never agreed to that.

The data was collected honestly. The ethical problem is how it was reused.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Personal dataInformation about a living person who can be identified.
EthicsIdeas about what is right and wrong in how we act.
Informed consentA person agrees after being told clearly how their data will be used.
ReuseUsing data again for a new purpose.
PermissionOfficial approval to use or see data.
ArchiveTo store data for the long term, away from everyday use.
Third partyAn outside organisation that is not part of the first two.
DatabaseAn organised store of data in tables.

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

Consent for use and reuse

People must give informed consent for a use. The consent covers that use only. If you want to use the data in a new way, you must ask again, or find another lawful reason.

Old consent does not stretch to cover a new purpose.

Permissions and access

Only the right people should see the data. Give each person the least access they need for their job. Check who asks and why.

A coach may need fitness scores. The sales team does not. Keep a list of who has access and review it.

Four ethical questions

ThemeQuestion to askGood practice
ConsentDid people agree to this use?Ask again for a new use
Permissions and accessShould this person see it?Least access, reviewed often
Storage and archivingDo we still need it?Store only when needed, then delete or archive safely
ReuseIs the new use the same as the consent?Define the purpose and keep to it
Third partyIs it going outside the organisation?Share only with a lawful reason and an agreement

Try it: find reuse that breaks consent

Code: sql
SELECT requester, asked_purpose FROM requests
WHERE asked_purpose <> consented_purpose
ORDER BY requester;

Check: use and reuse

7 more parts of this lesson are in the full curriculum, with the tasks, the final check and the labs. A college account gives your students all of it.
