DA 4.2: Pictures, XR and 3D models

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

Data you can walk around

A school wants to show where its energy goes. One team draws a poster. Another builds a 3D model of the building. A third lets visitors wear a headset and walk through it.

These are three more ways to show data. Each costs more and suits a different job.

Key words

WordWhat it meansExample
ImageA picture such as a photo, a drawing or a map.A map of the school with hot rooms marked
InfographicA poster that mixes short text, icons and numbers to tell one story.Where our energy goes
Extended realityA name for virtual, augmented and mixed reality together. It is also called XR.A headset tour of a data model
Virtual realityA computer-made world you see all around you through a headset.Walking through a 3D chart
Augmented realityDigital information laid over your view of the real world.Room energy shown on a phone camera
3D modelA shape in three dimensions that can be turned and viewed from any side.A model of a building
3D printingMaking a real object layer by layer from a 3D model.A printed raised chart
AccessibilityMaking a message usable by everyone, including people with a disability.Strong contrast and a touch version

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

I can describe images, infographics, XR and 3D models and printing, and judge when each suits a brief.

Images and infographics

An image can be a map, a photo or a drawing. A map shows where. A photo shows what something looks like.

An infographic tells one story with a few numbers, icons and short words. Give it one message, a clear order and the source of the data. Keep text short and contrast strong.

Extended reality

Extended reality, or XR, covers three kinds. Virtual reality puts you inside a made world. Augmented reality adds data on top of the real world, for example through a phone camera.

Mixed reality goes further: virtual objects sit in the real room and react to it. XR suits training and exploring complex data, but it costs more and not everyone can use it.
