Teach it with examples
A made-up soup stall wants to know if it will sell out. The owner has eight past days. For each she wrote the temperature, the rain and whether the soup sold out.
She does not want to write rules. She wants the computer to look at the old days and work out the rule itself. That idea is machine learning (a computer finds the rule from examples).
Key words
| Word | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial intelligence | Computer systems that do tasks which normally need human thinking. | Spotting spam email |
| Machine learning | A part of AI where a computer finds the rule from examples. | Learning when soup sells out |
| Supervised learning | Machine learning from examples that already have the right answer. | Past days marked yes or no |
| Feature | A fact about each example that the computer may use. | Temperature |
| Label | The right answer attached to an example. | Sold out: yes |
| Training data | The examples the computer learns from. | The eight past days |
| Test data | Examples kept back to check the learning on days it has not seen. | Four more days |
| Bias | A pattern in the data or a method that treats something unfairly or leans one way. | Only cold days in the examples |
The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

I can say how AI and machine learning differ, explain supervised learning, and check a simple learner on new examples.

AI is the big idea, ML a part
Artificial intelligence (AI) is any computer system doing a task that normally needs human thinking. A chess program is AI. So is a voice helper.
Machine learning is the part of AI where the system learns from data instead of being given every rule. Most of the AI in the news today uses it.
