DA 1.3: What information systems store and do

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

55 minutes

What happens when you press Buy

You press Buy on a pair of trainers. In a second the shop saves your order, takes one pair out of its stock count, and sends you an email.

One press, four jobs. An information system does these jobs again and again, for thousands of people at once.

Four features of every system

Every information system has four features.

  1. Storage: it keeps data.
  2. Manipulation: it changes or calculates with data.
  3. Retrieval: it gets data back. It can also export it, so another system can use it.
  4. Applications: the programs people use, such as a shop page or a booking screen.

Five types of system

TypeFeatureFunction
Online purchasingPublic-facing, shows products and pricesRecords orders, works out prices, suggests items
Booking and schedulingTime and date slots, availabilityManages resources, takes payment, sends email confirmation
Inventory managementLogs stock levels, can order automaticallyStock control, current levels, email alerts
CRMLeads, customers and salesManages customer lists and contact
Social mediaPublic-facing, used by many kinds of organisationManages content that users make

Try it: store, change, retrieve

Code: sql
-- Retrieval: ask for the items running low.
select item, amount
from stock
where amount < 5
order by item;

-- Try it: change 5 to 2 and press Run.

3 more parts of this lesson are in the full curriculum, with the tasks, the final check and the labs. A college account gives your students all of it.
