AC 5.3: When firms rely on data systems

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

60 minutes

Friday at Harbour Dental

Harbour Dental is made up. It keeps every patient record on one computer. On Friday morning the computer will not start.

The dentist cannot see who is booked. Nobody can see old notes. A patient asks where her private records are going.

The firm relied on one system. When it failed, the whole firm failed.

Security and privacy risks

A security breach can harm three things, called CIA.

Confidentiality: the wrong people see private data. Integrity: data is changed or wrong. Availability: the system or data is not there when needed.

A privacy breach shows information to people who should not see it. It may be about people (personal information). It may be about the business, such as a price plan.

Check integrity by counting

Code: python
original = [10, 20, 30, 40]
copy = [10, 20, 30]
if len(original) == len(copy):
    print("Same number of rows")
else:
    print("Rows are missing:", len(original) - len(copy))
