AC 5.1: Who has a stake in a data project

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

45 minutes

One new sales dashboard, many opinions

A garden centre buys a dashboard to show its cafe sales. A dashboard means one screen of charts and numbers.

The owner hopes it saves money. The waiters worry it will be used to watch them. The bank that lent the money wants to be paid back. The council wants customer data kept safe.

Everyone cares, but about different things. An analyst must know who they are.

Internal stakeholders work inside

Owners own the organisation. In a small firm one person may own it.

Directors make the big decisions and lead the organisation.

Employees do the daily work. They use the systems most, so they notice when a system is slow or hard to use.

External stakeholders are outside

Customers or clients buy the product or service. Suppliers sell the organisation what it needs. Shareholders own shares but do not run it daily. Outsourced services are other companies doing a job, such as payroll. Investors or funders supply money. The government sets the laws and collects tax.
