AC 3.8: Slips when typing data in

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

50 minutes

One slip, one wrong product

A stock clerk types the product code SK-0472 when it should be SK-0427. Two digits swapped.

Another day, somebody types SK-0428. One digit is wrong. Both slips look small. Both put the stock count on the wrong product. This lesson names the two slips and four ways to stop them.

Key words

WordWhat it meansExample
Data entryTyping or choosing data to put into a system.Filling in a stock form
Transcription errorCopying a character wrongly.0427 typed as 0428
Transposition errorSwapping two characters that are next to each other.0427 typed as 0472
ValidationA check that input is sensible and allowed.Four digits only
VerificationA check that input was typed correctly, such as typing it twice.Enter the email again
Drop-down menuA list the user picks from instead of typing.Size: small, medium, large

Two kinds of typing slip

A transcription error is when you copy a character wrongly. You see 7 and type 8.

A transposition error is when two neighbouring characters swap places. You mean 27 and type 72.

They happen when people are tired, rushed or copying long codes. Both are very common in data entry.

Worked example: spot the slip
