AC 2.9: Testing methods for people, load and change

This is the first page of the lesson. Read it and have a go at the activities. The rest is in the full lesson.

70 minutes

The dashboard that passed every test

A survey dashboard passes every test the team wrote. On the first morning, 600 pupils open it at once and it freezes. The head of year cannot find the filter button.

Different problems need different tests. This lesson covers the other six methods.

Key words

WordWhat it means
Acceptance testingthe customer checks the solution does what they asked for, before they accept it
Usability testingreal users try tasks to see how easy the solution is to use
Regression testingrunning old tests again after a change
Load testingchecking it copes with the busiest day you expect
Stress testingpushing it past its limit to see how it breaks
Closed box testingtesting with no view of the inside, only inputs and outputs
Open box testingtesting with a view of the inside, so every path can be tried

The cells students fill in are left blank in this preview.

By the end of this lesson

Note

I can define six more testing methods, give a benefit and a drawback of each, say when to use them, and use one.

Acceptance, usability and regression testing

MethodWhat it isWhy use itBenefitDrawback
AcceptanceThe customer tries it against what they asked forGet agreement that it is finishedShows it meets the customer's needVery late: changes are costly
UsabilityReal users do real tasks while you watchFind confusing designFinds problems code tests cannotNeeds real people, partly opinion
RegressionRe-run old tests after a changeCheck the change broke nothing elseStops new faults breaking old thingsThe test set grows large

Load, stress, closed box and open box testing

MethodWhat it isWhy use itBenefitDrawback
LoadAdd the number of users you expect on the busiest dayCheck it still works thenShows if it copes with real demandNeeds tools and a test copy
StressGo past the limit on purposeFind where and how it breaksShows the breaking pointCan disrupt a live system
Closed boxGive inputs and check outputs, no view insideTest as a user sees itNeeds no knowledge of the codeCan miss paths hidden inside
Open boxSee the code and test every pathBe thoroughFinds hidden faultsNeeds skill and the design

4 more parts of this lesson are in the full curriculum, with the tasks, the final check and the labs. A college account gives your students all of it.
